Many people assume it is easy to spot the signs of depression. Sometimes, though – especially in milder cases – depression doesn’t involve crying or feeling obviously unhappy all the time. Sometimes the signs are more subtle.
People with hidden depression often don’t want to acknowledge the severity of their depressive feelings in the hope, or assumption, that these feelings will just go away on their own.
There are several signs to look out for if you think that you, or someone you care about, may be suffering from hidden depression.
1. Withdrawing and Disengaging
This could be described as a lack of interest in hobbies, activities, and social outings which you used to love to participate in. For example, every Friday after work you go for a meal with friends, but recently you find yourself making excuses not to go.
If you notice your behavior is becoming increasingly uncharacteristic or becoming more and more isolated, this could be an indication of depression.
2. Change in Sleeping, Eating, or Drinking Habits
People suffering with depression can find it increasingly difficult to sleep properly. They can find their sleep is more disturbed and unsettled. But, it can also be to the opposite extreme, where they can’t see a reason to get out of bed in the morning.
You may notice eating and drinking habits change too. This can take the form of a loss of appetite leading to quick weight loss, or the person could begin to overeat or drink alcohol excessively in a hope to supress low mood or negative feelings.
3. Overreacting
A person who is depressed is more likely to overreact to a situation which in the past wouldn’t have bothered them.
This might come across as someone who doesn’t normally cry while watching a movie who suddenly bursts into tears during a poignant scene. Or someone who doesn’t normally get angry suddenly gets very mad at a driver who cut them off in traffic. Or they take a comment personally which in the past they would have brushed off or laughed about.
4. Mood Swings
You might assume the behavior of someone with depression to be somber and sad, but irritability and a fluctuation in mood can be a symptom of depression. The responsibilities of life can be demanding and draining, and dealing with that alongside depression can lead to a short temper and the inability to control feelings.
5. Inability to Focus
It’s common for people with depression to become very indecisive and have trouble focusing on even the most basic tasks. As a result, quality of work can suffer, tasks can take longer, and thought processes can become sluggish.
